Tunisian Block Scarf Crochet Pattern
When I was creating all my makes for Christmas I was struggling finding enough different scarf patterns for men that didn’t look exactly the same or that appealed to me for the various men in my life, boyfriend, brother, dad etc.
I was purusing around the internet looking for some inspiration and found this gorgeous stitch design by Sarah Marie Brotnov @sarahsuehowdoyoudo.
I knew I wanted to use this stitch in some way. After playing around with some swatching I loved how it looked with the Tunisian simple stitch. The best part, was that the whole design in my head was coming together using just the simple stitch! So this is a great beginner friendly pattern.
***You can purchase an INEXPENSIVE AD-FREE PDF of this pattern on Etsy HERE and on Ravelry HERE! This beautifully formatted PDF is a total of 4 pages including the cover page***
I know why you’re all here it’s for the pattern! So here we go
- Yarn: 350 yds of worsted weight yarn (4)
- 9mm Tunisian Crochet Hook
- Darning Needle
- Scissors
Gauge:
13 sts by 9 rows in
Tss
Gauge is not critical for this pattern. Your scarf will be wider and/or longer depending on your tension.
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sts – stitches
Tss – Tunisian simple stitch
Notes:
The X stitch design for this pattern was designed by Sarah Marie Brotnov @sarahsuehowdoyoudo
She has a great Instagram post detailing how to do this stitch.
Each “row” consists of both a forward and return Tunisian row.
Loop left on hook (vertical bar) at the end of a return pass will always be skipped and count as 1 Tss
This pattern can be made using any weight yarn as long as you use the appropriate hook size.
If you are adjusting the pattern the total number of foundation loops should be an even number that divisible by 2 results in an odd number.
EG:
22 loops on your hook: 22/2 = 11 This will work!
24 loops on your hook: 24/2 = 12 This will not work.
26 loops on your hook: 26/2 = 13 This will work! Etc
Pattern:
Row 1: ch 21, work a forward pass and return in Tss to create a foundation row. (22 loops) Loop left on hook (vertical bar) at the end of a return pass will always be skipped and count as 1 Tss
Row 2-9: Skip vertical bar on hook, *skip next Tss and Tss into the next loop, go back and Tss into the skipped st. repeat from * 4 more times. Tss in each st to the end of the row. Return
Row 10-17: Skip vertical bar on hook, *skip next Tss and Tss into the next loop, go back and Tss into the skipped st. repeat from * 9 more times. Tss in the last st. Return
Row 18-25: Skip vertical bar on hook, Tss into the next 10 sts, *skip next Tss and Tss into the next loop, go back and Tss into the skipped st. repeat from * 4 more times. Tss in the last st. Return
Row 26-33: Skip vertical bar on hook, Tss in each st across. Return
Repeat rows 2-33 2 more times or until your scarf is almost your desired length
Repeat rows 2-25.
Tss fasten off
Edging (optional)
Join yarn to a corner and sc evenly around the scarf.
I prefer the look of a row of sc around the scarf as it evens out the stitches where the Xs pull the fabric and the Tss’s are flater. But this is totally optional. You can also add additional rows of sc if you’d like the edging to be longer.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
